Noob needs some '85 528e assistance! (yes I searched!)

Hey gang!

I come from the VW/Porsche/Volvo camp, but I just picked up my first BMW and it needs a little TLC. I heard this was a good place to start! I was at an auto auction and the car was clean...I got it for $225, so I figured why not! It's an '85 528e, 165k miles (odo/trip/speedo not working), 5-speed. The engine seems healthy enough. BUT, it does have some issues. Could anyone tell me where to look? Here's the deal...

#1: Speedo/Trip/Odo not working.
I heard there's a sensor in the diff, but is there something else to check? Contacts at the back of the cluster or something?

#2: Tach and MPG (vac) gauge seem to work intermittently.

#3: Turn signal/horn/etc circuit is messed up!
When this fuse is plugged in, it lights up the gauge cluster like a XMas tree and then the fuse blows. Service light and some other lights come on. Turn signals don't work and that scares me!

#4: Hunting idle (500-900) and Low-RPM/low-throttle surging/bucking.
Also bucks if you try to hold a constant speed. No bucking at all under hard throttle. I did notice that a PO installed 2 cat converters in a row, not sure what effect choking the exhaust would have. Also, the AFM cover had been removed at some point and stuck back on, as if someone tried to adjust it. I was thinking of checking for broken vac lines, and cleaning the ISV. Any other ideas here?

Thank you SO MUCH in advance for your help! And if anyone has interior parts for sale (cream color), I could use a couple. Let me know!

Bueller? Bueller? Any help here?

Today we Seafoamed the engine, changed the oil, installed a new cat, new plugs, threw in some fuel system cleaner, cleaned the ISV, and changed the ISV hose that goes to the AFM/intake boot.

The idle still races up and down and the car still bucks, but initially, cleaning the ISV seemed to smooth out the idle for a couple mins...then it went back to the old up-and-down. I am leaning toward ISV, AFM, or possibly the TPS.

Any ideas on how to check these items with a multimeter? I don't have a Bentley manual and the Haynes doesn't cover this. Please advise! Thanks!

It sounds like most of the surging, MPG, would be from 21 year old faulty vacuum lines. This would also explain the no problems surging at WOT. If the cats arent plugged up, it will have no ill effects on the car running.

Get a good compression gauge and when you replace all the spark plugs, pull all of them out (this way you will make sure the cylinders arent bleeding over via bad head gasket), check compression on each cylinder and then put your new plugs in.

Update! Went to the junkyard, they had 3 528e's so no worries there. Picked up 2 ICV's (yes, I am used to ISV...idle stabilizer valve...from VW's...hehe), and an AFM.

It turned out to be the AFM...replaced it and now the idle is rock-solid and the surging/bucking is completely gone. YAY! My gas mileage got 60% better as well from what it seems.

As far as the speedo...I pulled a sensor out of the back of the diff from a junkyard car (2 10mm bolts). Does this sensor control both the speedo AND odometer? I'm hoping that's my problem.

And I can't identify any of the sensors on the coolant flange because I don't have a bentley manual...but if anyone could explain (hopefully with a photo) which sensor is which on that coolant flange, that would be awesome! I am looking for the coolant temp sender for the gauge cluster but I'm not sure which one it is.

Last but not least...what controls the tach signal? Is there a sensor for that too? Thanks you guys, I appreciate it!

Ok, another update. Just in case someone searches for this stuff in the future.

I pulled a cluster from an 87 535i in the junkyard...so now my speedo and odometer both work just fine. Same with the "mpg" gauge and the tach. Also, my coolant temp gauge works now. It looks like the problem was a bad gauge cluster. As an added bonus, I now have a 160mph speedo and a 7k rpm tach just for fun.

The AFM fixed the the surging/bucking problem.

I still haven't found the turn signal problem, but that's next on my list. Thanks for the opinions!

my 87 635csi had alot of the same troubles...

When my spedometer stopped working. Pulling the factory radio fixed it. Don't ask... it just WorkedForMe.

My motor also stalled, spat, sputtered, all kinds of stuff. $120 bucks and a call to bavarian autosport I had it running perfectly. If it was rubber and it was underneath the hood, I replaced it. Vaccum lines, intake stuff, just everything made of rubber. After 12 years as da_bull said, that stuff has to be worn out and cracked.

Turn signal/horn stuff I never ran into. Sounds like you've got some electrical mayhem going on under the hood. You need to check all your wiring for faults. It's going to be a pain, but it sounds like you've got a wire shorting out somewhere.
