HI
I’m pretty new to this forum as well and I seem to be having similar problem with my 2000 528i with 90,000Miles.
When driving slow and hitting bump I could hear the clunking noise coming from front suspension (I hear it coming from the driver side). When driving at the speed between 50-60mph I feel little vibration on the steering wheel as well as I hear like wobbling noise(sounds like loose part vibrating, etc) coming for the same area.
I have mechanic look at it and he claimed he checked bushings, arms and stabilizer links and everything seem to be tight. He says it maybe steering rack that is causing this noise and suggesting replacing steering rack.
Also, I want to mention that I don’t feel any play when moving steering wheel, feels perfectly smooth, not any kind of noise.
Has anyone experience same or similar issue? Any ideas?
Do you think steering rack should be replaced?
Control arms and bushings seemt o be tight.
Still not sure what it can be. Noise can be heard when going slow over the bump, but dontreally feel anything on the steering wheel at that point. When going faster it is not noticable until i hit 50 tom 60mph, then start feel a litttle vibration on the steering wheel and hear like loose metal parts whabling, from the same area the noise is coming(driver suspension side) when hitting bump, patwhole while driving slow......
I guess I will have to go with tech recomendation and replace steering rack, hope it will resolve the issue.
Hi Miro - I too believe it is your lower control arm bushings and maybe you are due for some new front struts. I realize you didn't mention this but I would rule out wheel bearings. Those will eventually need replacing too. For now, focus on the lower control arm bushings and struts. They may feel tight to a mechanic but when I replaced mine, it was like NEW again.
Think cartilage in the joints when it comes to bushings.....

miro, I am having exactly the same problem & I have also received the same advise of the stearing rack ..... let us have a clear plan to find the problem ... I suggest the following steps (based on the above advises):
1. check the heatsheilds.
2. check the lower control arm bushings
3. Finally you should check the stearing rack becuse it is too expensive to replce it
Actually it was a steeering rack, apparently it is not common issue but it was in my case, the noise seem to be coming from the area where the rack is conected with steering column/box.
Replace it with used rack and noise went away
