When I have the car on (D) and I'm at a stop light I hear this whistling noise coming from the belt/fan area of the engine... as soon as I touch the gas (even a little tip) the noise is no longer there. One day I decided to spray the belts with WD 40 and the noise momentary stop but few min' later it came back on again.
Could be your belt has gone bad...check the belt for glazing, cracks, any signs of wear and replace both...if noise persists it could be a bearing in a pulley (but more likely from the sound of what you are hearing it's the belt)
You know the price of the belts really isn't all that much and it isn't a hard job to accomplish either, but if you really have to take it to the dealer, expect to pay at least 1hr labor plus the price of parts

What could this be?
The device that applies pressure on the roller to keep the belt tight.
Anyway, I do not have the problem but will do the Big cooling dept job this weekend and will post pics at bimmerboard.com.
No, I haven't figured it out yet. I've only heard it a couple times now, but it's very noticeable, and definitely coming from a belt-driven accessory. The fact that it comes and goes says to me it's something that runs intermittently (fan, a/c). I turend the a/c on and off, and it didn't change, so I'm checking the fan when I get a chance to work on it.
Guys, the belt replacement procedure is simple. Check out the repair manual for E34 on this forum. It's the same concept for E39's.
I replaced my belts on my 8 (E31) (again, same concept as E34/E39) and it wasn't that difficult. You'll need to draw a belt diagram that's shows you how the belts are attached to the pulleys/idlers.
I bought my parts from www.autohausaz.com
