No dash lights

I have a 2001 m5 and the small problem is when I turn on the lights I have none in the dash which light up the speedo or rev counter.The gear kob and heater does not light up.I had it with a mate and he was able to turn them on with a computer and told me it was the light switch which I bought from bmw didn't work all the fuses have been checked anyone got a clue????

My guess would be a wiring fault, such as a bad earth.

Had a mate put a computer into the car and she brought up two codes 12,21 something about the instrument cluster and electrical problem he has to take the car for a day and thinks it a bare wire someware

Just remove the cluster and have a look at the rear for a loose connection.
