I finally got some sound back in my 5er, and she sounds better than ever.

The stock amplifier for the premium sound system in the car sounded like garbage with the new pioneer speakers I installed, Probably because of the low wattage (10x25watts) and the built in crossovers. I spent around 5 days attempting to work with the stock amplifier and bypass it, to no avail. I ended up frying the thing and finally decided just to take out the thing and rewire the sound system myself.

I did a fairly good job of hiding the wires, the only visible wires (for now) are the two RCA interconnect cables that run along the center console (underneath) and emerge at the rear of the console where they are visible until they dissapear underneath the back seat. I'm still looking for a way to route the wires away from there or hide them (perhaps underneat the carpeting)

The speaker wires are hidden and run along the sides of the car in the door jams under the plastic doorsills that BMW so graciously provided room for me to get under. The rear speakerwires simply dump into the trunk and hide behind the back piece, I'm hoping to drill a few holes in the rear trunk lining and find a way to hide them until they emerge to hook to the amp.

Had to mount the amplifier using a few pieces of scrap wood I had lying around as a backing for the screws, The back of the rear trunk liner accomadates this purpose nicely as the foam insulation on the back kind of absorbs the wood pieces so they dont stick out.

It sounds amazingly better than the premium sound system option that came stock. My friends and I both agreed that it sounded alot better between my car and my dads car, especially at volume where the pioneer really outshines the stock setup on clarity. Thats probably because of the signal to noise ratio. The stock sound system produces (I remember reading this somewhere) a 45dB signal to noise ratio, where the pioneer setup (at the weakest point) provides a 104dB signal to noise ratio.

Total cost for the amplifier [Pioneer GM-6100F] and the wiring kit [Stinger kit with 8 guage power and ground wire, 14 guage speaker wire, and one 17ft RCA interconnect cable.] plus another interconnect wire, came to around 220 bucks. Well worth it in my mind.

Anyway, enough of my ramblings, this is how she looks, hoping to finish up a little cosmetics on the wiring, but overall I think she came out quite nice.

If anyone wants any more pics of how i hid the wiring or how I did anything, just ask.

uhhh....
do you have aftermarket speakers?

If not, your gonna blow them real soon because I don't see you utilizing the factory crossovers (or aftermarket) anywhere in that set up.

The crossovers are essential for sound quality and seperation of frequencies to the proper speakers.

The stock amplifier is behind the paneling on the left side of the trunk, opposite the jack pretty much, take out the panel and it'll be right there. Here's a picture of the location on the e34:

http://www.bmwe34.net/e34main/upgrade/Data...er_location.jpg

Removing the stock amp is possible, and I'm sure you could run some speaker wire from each speaker back to your head unit, but I would only do that if you just replaced your speakers and dont plan on getting an amplifier. The BMW sound system only works with all its components, As its a 10 speaker system, you wont get anything out of simply rewiring the stock speakers.

If you have already replaced your speakers however, and dont plan on replacing the amplifier, Just run some speaker wire from your aftermarket speakers and wire it up to the harness for your head unit. I wouldnt reccomend this as amplifiers are relativley cheap, fairly easy to install, and they make it sound oh so much nicer. Plus if you change your mind, you're stuck rewiring again and routing the wires in a complete diffrent direction.

That said, if you havent replaced your speakers and replace the BMW amp, you're looking at trouble. First of all the wiring harness is absolute HELL. second of all the crossovers for these speakers are built into the amplifier itself, so you're gonna have a bad time.

Sporky -- I've replaced the speakers in the car with Pioneer's, 5 1/4 inch two ways. Built in crossovers as they are two way speakers.

Also regarding the speakers, The 5 1/4 speakers when powered by the stock amp are absolutley gutless. The treble is simply alright, and the bass is downright awful. Mainly because the speakers are designed to operate at at least 40watts+, and the BMW amp only provides 25watts to each speaker. That being said, the BMW amp, which is quite small, powers a total of 10 speakers.

Up front, theres two in the kick panels, two on the top of the dash and two in the doors.
There is a seperate tweeter and woofer for each side in the rear, too.

Replacement speakers more commonly come in 2 way seperate components than they do in 3 way, but you COULD replace all 10 if you looked hard enough.

That would requrire a different amplifier for the proper sound, though - as the crossover points are not adjustable and the x-overs are built into the factory amplifer.

crutchfield doesnt know anything about our cars. there are so many different choices and it seems all they say is 4" in the 3 series and 5.25" in the 5/7 series. they dont know and dont care to know because most of the BMW owners (present company excluded) dont ever care to replace their speakers and IF they do, they're not going to crutchfield.com, they are taking it to the high end car audio to have it done right.

The amp with all the xovers built into it is in the trunk on the driver side. Directly across from the jack. (behind the carpet)

All you would need is speakers of your choice and a 4 channel amplifier (5 channel if you wanted a sub)

Because the stock speakers are 5 1/4 and you have to do slight mods to get a larger speaker in, bass extension is REALLY lacking. I don't know how much of an audiophile you are, but I have to have a VERY well balanced sound - and that often requires a subwoofer with any mid driver under 7"

Subs aren't always "thumpers" - you can get them set up to blend and not even know that you have it. I would recommend a 5 channel amp and a JL Audio 6 w0 subwoofer in a ported enclosure if you are not a sub kind of guy. It's not loud, its very small and it fills in the musical void quite nicely.

i was thinking more like a dvd player for headrest LCD's, sun visor LCD's, alpine headunit, 2x15inch, a mono amp and a multichannels amp for the speakers. after seeing what they're showing here at the auto salon, i knew i could get some ranking and some name for the e34.. everyone here are either subaru, skyline, 200sx, supra, new bmw and benz... u see it so much that u wanna throw some old school in the mix that is done right..
