I am new to the board and just bought a used 1998 528i. The a/c compressor is makes an occasional clicking noise when the engine is at idle. I think it is the a/c's clutch making this noise. It doesn't really bother me so much but I was wondering if this is something I can take to any good a/c shop and have fixed or is this going to be a big fat pay day to the BMW dealer's service department.

I love the board, lots of good information on here. BTW, my car is everything I expected and more. I see why they call it the Ultimate Driving Machine. Awesome. I will never buy a another make if I can help it.

What I have noticed in the past on all cars with A/C, that is just the compressor turning on and off. The A/C compressor isn't always on when the A/C is on.

Yes, but this is a persistent clickety clack that can go on for 30 seconds not the usual click associated with the compressor cycling on and off.
Sorry, I should have elaborated more.

Well, my A/C compressor finally died. I just replaced it with a new one through the dealership. $1272.00! There is only one car A/C shop in the area that will work on BMW's and they are closed for relocation unitl June.

I have to say that although I didn't like paying for a new compressor at 90,000 miles, I sure feel good about it now. Just one thing I will not have to worry about. It sure works great!

Although I have never been a fan of taking my cars to the dealership in the past for such work, I really think the dealership here is pretty good and straightforward. I could have spent more money for the dryer but they didn't see any isues with the one I had and told me so before they started the compressor work.
