E28 use the same size rims as e34. ok, now e39 rims will not fit on an e34 without a lot of messing about, yet 98 740 rims will fit straight onto an e39 - that means catagorically that 98 740 rims will NOT just slot straight onto a e28. However you may be able to purchase adjustment rings which will allow this (they are available to let e39 5er and 7er rims fit the e34's).
Okay, a friend of mine has a '98 740il and her factory wheels fit my six. Now, the 6er sits on the 5er's wheelbase so I would say yes. But, I'm not sure about the offset. I was just playing around one day to see if they would mount, and they did. But as far as everything else, I'm not real sure!

5er = e28 e34 e39 e60
e28 & e34 rims = the same
e39 & 98-2002 7er rims = the same
e60 - haven't got a clue
98 7er rims will NOT just drop onto a e28 - for a start the center bore is smaller on the e28 and e34 than the e39 and 7er - this means a fitting ring is required (even with this there is often probs with vibration), also you may have problems with the offset, but I wouldn't be able to say for sure.
