I just bought a used 2007 BMW 328xi, and this fault code has just appeared for me too!
Another description of this code (taken from the 2006 330i DTC list) is:
P1554 - Engine Position System 'A' Performance (Bank 1)
My car just rolled over 50,000 miles too, so out of luck with BMW's manufactuer warranty for covering it. I do, however, have the statutory state used car dealer lemon law warranty and an extended warranty (subject to deductible). I'm bringing the car back to the used dealer for them to look at the problem, but of course I'm not getting my hopes up that they'll do much more than clear the code and say it has been fixed (it is quite inconvenient to bring the car back too).
I do note that when I put my key into the slot and switch the car's ignition system ON (but not start the engine), there is a high pitched noise coming from under the hood which lasts for maybe 5 minutes (is that normal?). While I don't have a repair manual for the car, I suspect the fault code is related to this noise, and in particular that throttle body adaptation is failing. My freeze frame confirms the code was thrown just after starting the engine.
The fact that the throttle body was actually changed by someone here and that didn't fix the problem suggests to me that maybe the P1554 is related to some other related sensor failing, such as the throttle position sensor?
Really, has no one yet gotten this problem fixed? I really need to make sure the right part is fixed, not a bunch of other parts that really are good. Thanks.
I checked with my dealer who mentioned it might be the "Barometric Pressure Sensor" but intresting enough the engin light disapread by itself two weeks ago and has not give me the warning since!!
I will ask my dealer to change the sensor once I take it for next oil change. this might help to reduce my Gas consumption that I am getting 13.1L/100KM avrage HW/city drive.
