I have an 98 528i BMW and yesterday i was in going threw the drive threw getting food and then i notice my car started to over heat. So i parked it for like 5 mins started it back up and it was normal then let it sit there for a min or 2 then it started to over heat again. So i turned it off let it sit for a little longer started it and it was back to normal so i was driving home and about 3 mins into driving it started to over heat alittle but then went back down. So pretty much when i drive it over heats then it'll cool down alittle then it'll over heat again its weird. I dont know anything about these kind of cars and i just got it last week. I was thinking it could be the thermostat sticking but the dude i got it from got a brand new thermostat, water pump, and clutch fan put in it the day i got it. And i also noticed when i start it up now theres lie ka dark gray of smoke coming from the exhuast. Any ideas ?!?!
See i went to check the oil yesterday but i couldnt find the dip stick... I know it might sound retard and i do know about cars but never with a BMW... And i looked at the coolant today and it looked perfectly fine.
Oh i didnt check that because i thought that would be got the transmission because usually the stick for the transmission are red. But when i just went out and checked out i couldnt really tell. like it wasnt a milky color. But yeah all the parts are new you can tell they look new and you can see the new gaskets and the dude gave me a receipt. Also when you bleed your rad. are you susppose to add coolant while doing it ?
Ok so it started to do it again today... Did i do something wrong or what ? Its not running like crap or anything. I took it out of town and back yesterday with no problems. But i did notice a little bit of smoke like maybe half hour or so before it started to over heat. But the smoke was only there for like a min if that. It was low when i first opened it up and looked in there so i added some then started the car n then it started to overflow (the coolant) so i hurried up and open the bleeder screw and it took a min for the coolant to go but it was still overflowing so then once it did i put the cap back on and open bleeder screw back open and there was alot of stream/air coming out.
Make sure to bleed the system with the nose of the car up with the heater on full blast and start with the system cold you will lose coolant as the system bleeds
