I just installed the iceLink plus with a iPod mini in my 00 540i. After installing the latest firmware 2.03, I am very pleased with the operation. ID3 tag support is coming by the end of the month.
Hope this helps. If you would like to see the install pics just PM me.
the guy who owned it before took the cd changer out, so i can't listen to cds now
BUT instead of buying the original BMW cd changer, you can actually get an alpine cd changer with mp3 function built in that will fit right into our cars. It costs just as much as the bmw's changer, on ebay you can get it for 325 with buy it now feature. You gotta make sure you don't have DSP?(that what i think it's called, which you probably don't) and when buying off of ebay, make sure that this is for 528i, because these apline mp3 changers can be used in rovers and mercedeses as well.
so no need for ipods or anything, just get the mp3 player -- and ohh yeah, the canger will work with the buttons on the steering wheel, or at least that's what they said. i'm planning on buying one soon.

Hi,
have a e39 540i without cd changer too. There are wires installed in the trunk and car has multifunktional steering wheel, so i think the factory changer should work?
But our other car has JVC cd-changer with mp3 playback and cant imagine just listening plain cd-s anymore, so has anyone installed that Alpine mp3 cd changer superdeadman was talking about? Is it just plug&play or needs any adapters?
Thanks.
still haven't installed the player, but based on what it states on ebay, yeah it is plug and play and should work with your wheel.
i think this alpine mp3 works with a lot of plug and play cars so gotta make sure that you are getting adapter for bmw, but from what i do know, if you don't have DST (i think that's what it's called), you can get the plug and play alpine mp3 from ebay for $325

Be careful with the stuff you buy on Ebay. I went through a bad experience when I first got my 97 528i
They may say 'plug and play', but they leave out the fact that they will also be sending you a BlitzSafe Converter to plug the stock DIN plug and power cable between a 10 foot Alipine DIN cable and CD Changer. Also, the brackets with the Alpine are universal, so there very well may be some drilling required to get it to work.
90% of the time, the adapter provided will only work with a non-DSP vehicle, and there's no way to make it work without buying a new adapter.
If you have a thin coax cable in the CD changer well, then you DO have DSP. The stock unit will also have a DSP button on the right of the face. There are adapters out there that will allow you to use an aftermarket changer with a DSP head unit, but they cost a minimum of $150 and up.
