I presently have a 92 Carrera 4 Cabriolet Porsche. I'm considering a 98' 540i with 90,000 miles. I'm tired of the maintenance expenses on the 911 ($100 oil changes), I use to have an 528e 86' that was incredibly reliable. I just spent $7g's to fix everything on the 911 from AC to new Clutch to oil seals, to dash fans (3 pages worth of stuff).
How reliable would a 98 540i be at 90,000 miles. I'm looking for something I can pay for. (thus the high miles and 6 year old age) I'm also looking for a car that might have one quirk a year at most along with regular maintenance. I've been reading different forums, and it looks like these machines can be an electrical and engine cooling nightmare.
I've got a 93' Pathfinder with 253,000 miles that still runs strong and just requires oil changes and spark plugs. I wish it made my blood boil like the Porsche. I'm hoping the Beemer will fill the blood boil quota and be nearly as reliable as my Pfinder. Would the 540I be a good choice?
