My '97 528i died on the highway... It had a random misfire & misfires on 1, 2 , & 3. After all of the items below were replaced the misfire jumped to 4 & 5 plus the random misfire.
I have replaced the cps, the maf (twice), all plugs & coil packs w/connecters. I cut the cats out to see if they were clogged and still nothing. I cleaned the throttle body with carb cleaner and my car still runs like it has a potato stuck in the tail pipe. If I turn the car off and immediately back on, then quickly put it into drive it will take off decently. Otherwise, I am getting honked at by other drivers as it appears I am on a permanent Sunday drive... Please help....
had the same trouble with my 520i,i cleaned icv, checked maf, fuel pump air intakes etc, then had enough i went to bmw hereford uk paid £25 for check on computer came back with faulty camshaft sensor wont tell you how much they wanted to carry out repair,so i got the sensor off them for £74 and fitted it myself 5 min job my car now like a rocket
I just had the same thing happen to my 528iT wagon. Running very rough and high gas consumption. After some basic service, the mechanic found a hole the size of a finger in the small pipe coming off of the mass air flow pipe, or boot going to the throttle body. That would cause the car to run extremely rich since the car's computers would sense the car running too lean and compensate by increasing the fuel ratio to the injection system. The boot is only $16.00!!! I patched the hole, temporarily with some duct tape awaiting the new one, which should be in early next week. Found the part number on realoem.com, which matched the dealers parts inventory. Hope this helps. Good luck. JM>
