m62 timing

I have pulled a 4.4l. out of a 97 740il. It was in perfect running order. When I got the engine out I removed the top timing covers to check for wear on the tensioners. Now when I try to turn the motor by hand, it stops at about 45 degrees rotation, in iether direction. I am thinking it jumped timing and is being heid up by an open valve. Cav someone please shed some light on this for me!

are u turning the engine over with the upper timing covers removed? did u remove the sprockets and secondary chains or just the main tensioner?

yes, both upper covers were removed and the tensioner was realeased

you can not turn over the engine with the tensioner out unless you support the rail manually by giving it tension. If you try the chain will bind up.
