I am a bit confused here, soldering iron is used in the above link but marti used old card! also somewhere drilling is also mentioned!! so are all methods are for solving the same case or different cases? In my case I have two clusters, first one with number of pixels not working at all but the second one is having few pixels disapearing sometimes.
I have not pulled mine apart, so I'm not sure if the cause of the failure is pressure related or solder issues. The majority of the ones I know about have been bad solder issues.
Thing is you could send it off to VDO and they'll fix it with a warranty, so unless you really like to DIY, maybe that's the answer.
If you mess it up, your in trouble as you can't easily switch your dash with another. Tamper light will be on, all kinds of stuff. You'll be spending $$$$$ at the stealership, so hope that helps.
You can often find people on ebay who do this sort of repair, I had the same thing with a Jag a while ago, found a nerd on ebay, really fast and cheap!
It was last year took about a week and cost £20 ish, but that was a jag so have a look seewhat you can find, you may find the guy who does the jag display may be able to do the bm, you can only ask, I don't have a contact anymore but try searching bmw display or xj6 radio display, something like that
does anybody know why some pixels diappeared from the information pannel and millage indecator digits ????
thnx for your kind help again
I fixed my X5 cluster with guys in Toronto, Canada speedofix.com they should have an auction on ebay. my attempt to diy failed with broken motors and pixels were working for a couple of moths then gone... I would say if you repair your car for sell it is a one story, but if you need it for yourself consider a professional fix
