Loose Left-hand Wiper

My brother and I have the same E34 problems and I guess it is quite common as we’ve 3 cars all with the same and I’ve seen it on some I looked to buy too.

The left hand wiper (as sitting in car looking forward) is loose and rubs the edge of the bonnet. Open the bonnet and raise the wiper arm off the screen and there is an immense amount of play in the shaft where it goes through the mounting.

Is this as common as I think and is it an easy fix?

my driver's wiper ( the left ) stripped it's threading and stopped moving once also. what i did was file in new lines on the threading and tightened it even harder. it's probably not what happened to you but thats how i fixed an otherwise wiper that would have had to have been replaced.
