used I'm considering replacing my stock bulb tail lights with a set of new LED/CELIS lights. Is this an easy upgrade? Any pitfalls I should be aware of?
You will have no bother at all. When you purchase your new lites from a BMW dealer give them the year and serial number to make sure you've got the correct ones. They do look good.are you going with the clear ones or the smoked ones ?
Trust all goes well.
Or save yourself a buttload of money and DON'T buy them from the BMW dealer, buy them from www.bavauto.com or better yet, from a user named PAVRAC on eBay, which is where many people around here have gotten their CELIS lights and are very satisfied. Go to www.bmwtips.com for installation instructions. It's not hard at all.

I bought mine from Pavrac for my e39 (1998 528i) and I am overly satisfied. They work perfectly! The installation took less then 20 minutes...soo perfect... Go for it, it is a WHOLE new look to the car, especially with clear corners!
I too bought from "PAVRAC" on Ebay...I got both the celis tail lights and new angel eye headlights for a LOT less than BMW would charge me...I would highly reccomend him.
Regarding Smoked or Clear LED Tails -- I believe the clear lights don't look as good on a dark vehicle (like my Orient Blue 540i) as they do on the lighter colored vehicles. The white tails on dark vehicles provide too much contrast and look like cheap aftermarket add-ons. I'm going with Smokes all the way round: Tails, sides, and Angle Eyes. I'm in the process of doing some comparison shopping now.
I went with the smoked HELLA CELIS LED tail lights and love them! I got them from PAVRAC (he's with http://www.eurosportdesign.com -- their new website is still under construction, but you can email him).
