Known issues e39 540i/6?

Hello all. I am currently talking to a guy about purchasing his 97 540i/6 speed. it's pretty high mileage (160K) but it's clean a whistle and says he has stacks of maintenace records for it. Seems to be on the up and up but is there anything I should really be looking out for on it or any known problems?

Thanks. I've owned BMW's in the past but never owned an e39. Any help or advice is greatly appreciated.

Well, just got an email from him that he sold the car locally. So, guess this thread is no longer specific to that car but I am going to continue to look for an e39, maybe an e36. So that said, anything you guys (and girls) can recommend I look out for on the e39's?

Go for e39 530i (2001 to 2003) or e46 between 2001 - 2005. Nice design, firm ride, excellent handling, high quality of materials, rich of options & superior interior.
