Key fob question.

Dear BMW Members -


I recently purchased a 1999 523i. The car is needless to say, SECOND to none. It has 155,000 Kilometers almost fully loaded except power seats and headlight washers. I have experienced a funny thing with the key fob. It will unlock the car but not lock it, since this is the first time I own a factory optioned remote, I am trying to solve this problem but with no luck. Are there any suggestions?

I have the same problem on my 1999 540, except it's intermittent - sometimes the fob will lock the car, sometimes I gotta stick the key in the door to get it to lock. I tried re-initializing the keys, but I don't think it helped. I suggest you try that first, since it's basically free. I do not know the re-initialization procedure for your car, however. Check your manual or hope someone else weighs in with some help.

Ive never heard of the 523, is that the lowest model they make? I didnt know they even made them without power seats

The 523i is an European model, it's actually a 525i with a 2.5 liter engine. Regarding the power seats, when ordering a BMW the option list is not simply divided between a premium package and a cold package but the options themselves can be ordered almost all separately. Other European members correct me if I'm wrong!

I think here in the states, BMWs ( and Mercedes ) are regarded as Luxury cars, while overseas theyre just car cars. While nice, I dont think people overseas consider them as luxurious as we do here. Overseas you see Mercedes E and BMW 5 Taxis, thats not something you're likely to see here. My uncle has a Mercedes overseas and its one of the most basic cars Ive ever seen and its a 99. Cloth seats, No Power, no frills, just car.

Hi mate try the resetting mode for your key if you dont have the info then here it is place key in the ignition and turn to position one then turn back and remove the key in under five seconds then press button 1 the button that opens the car and hold it then press button two the one that locks the car three times in quick succession the doors will lock and unlock if proceedure correct incedently when you do this sit in the car obviously but make sure all doors and windows are shut i hope this helps if it aint that then its more than likely a relay or something
