I would like to know what it takes to have an IPod installed in my 5er so that I could have total control of the music from the front consol (and steering wheel) and have the IPod be powered by the car battery.
Does anyone out there have any idea what is involved in this? Is it something that I could do on my own??
I am considering buying this mod for my 540. I work at Bestbuy so I can get it pretty cheap and free install. The kit retails for $199 and at times go on sale for around $179. Only question I have is how can I get the kit for DSP. All the sales guys at my store didn't know how to obtain one. Can I buy the DSP kit directly from Dension?
When I did an install on a friends Z4 with Nav and DSP he bought the entire kit from Dension made for cars with DSP. Take a peek at the site and see what is available for your model.

I too have a 540I (97). I bought the Dension kit from Best Buy. Kit I20-BMW-T. The kit does NOT come with the optional DSP cable. I found this out the hard way. So I called Dension USA and inquired about the optional DSP cable (thats really all it is, basically) and Jessie in the support dept. told me that the DSP kits as of 9/19/05 have been on backorder for the past 2 months and she expects them to continue to be on backorder for atleast another month. Pretty crappy if you ask me. I asked what this DSP "kit" is and she told me it is basically a wire (from radio shack)that hooks up to your DSP coaxial and runs to your battery.
She suggested contacting Tom@europeanautosource.com for info or suggestions on how to complete my Ipod installation. She said Tom was a former Dension employee. I can only hope that Tom can help me find a resolution in less than a month as my 6 disc changer took a poop.
i've heard of this mod - how do i know if i have dsp though?
I think you should see a button on your head unit or near your cassette unit(if applicable) that either says DSP. I think another way to tell is if you have a digital amplifier in the trunk near your CD changer but i'm not 100% positive. I'd have to walk out to the garage to verify but its cold out there
