On my 98 528i the door that conceals that "wonderful tape deck player" still works fine, but no longer has that wonderful BMW "dampened" slow opening movement . . . it just pops open very abruptly like some cheap Chevy.
Is this something that is easily fixed without going to a dealer? Spring come off?
there is a spring in there that has either come off or broke off. i'm pretty sure you would have to take the tape player out to get to it all. which you might need a special 5 sided allen type tool to get the radio face out then there are either some torx bits or phillips screw holding the tape player in. sometimes you can just put the spring back on but most of the time the plastic that the springs hook onto break off.
although it still works fine with it opening hard like that it is possible to crack the wood trim on the cover.

usually the way such things are designed is with a gear-driven viscous (thick fluid-based) "black box" damping device. Either the gear came off and the door is no longer connected to the viscous damping device, or else the viscous fluid has somehow leaked out of the device, leaving nothing to damp the motion. Either way it may not be easy to fix, because even if the gear fell of, where do you get a new one, or what fluid to use?
I think that if it was a spring that came off, your door wouldn't open at all...
