lol not a stupid question i asked myself about that one to..
it doesnt open it just slides backwards and forwards the reason is to give you a more comfortable arm rest position.. some arms shorter than others and keeps your hand on the shifter if you got a tip tronic..

Damn, I was trying to figure out how to lift that arm rest up when I first got my car. Checked the manual several times, looked under, yanked, tried everything, finally gave up. Actually that is really a waste of useable space.

the air vent and computer are under the arm rest. that is why there is no space.... at least that was what I was told by the tech. Don't feel stupid about the question, it took me a few minutes as well to figure it out.
When I first got my car, I nearly pulled the sliding arm rest off! The salesman watched me do this , I guess he finally had enough and told me it didn't open
