You might be missing the button that turns on the cruise control. It is a button on the wood trim, just to the right of the steering column. This should illuminate the green cruise light. Then set your cruise with the button with the arrow/speedometer on the top right of the wheel. use the +/- to control the speed. The I/O will shut it off without having to press the brake.

push the button on the dash for cruise control. and then push the plus button for speed and it will turn on. it might feel jerky the first couple times you use it but if you just have your foot lightly on the throttle it wont jump.

you got it first and said it better. :P Anyway, thats how you do it, although I have to press the + button on mine to set the speed. The little speedo arrow thing doesnt set the speed/ used maybe its a 97 thign or something. Or its broken
ok, well, first of all, no cruise control button on the dash... i got m style wheel so that i have the speedometer button and i/o and r/t(whatever it does)... so i turn on my cruise control, and i have a green cruise button on, then i drive at the speed i want, and then what?????!!!! pressin/holding the button with speedo and arrow doesn't work, pressing +/- doesn't really do anything either, r/t doesn't work...
the hack is r/t anyways?
so what should i do?

Ok, I think I have the same wheel as you, but I don't think it's an M wheel. To make cruise work for me I first have to turn it on with the "O/I" button which gives me the cruise control icon in my dash. Then to engage I hit the "+" button on the right-hand side of the my wheel. I have no idea what the upper-most button on the right-hand side of my steering wheel does, it has the cruise control icon, but doesn't seem to do anything for me.
Speaking of cruise control...mine is boken, I think...???!!! ghead It has never worked on my car since I have bought it...does anyone know how to diagnose this type of problem? I'm guessing this is something the dealership has to do.... used
Just so you all know I have an E34...any ideas would be greatly appreciated...

sounds like you have a cruise control problem. Once that light is on, you only have to tap the + . Also that little button that has the tach symbol will return you to you last set speed (as if you had to stop to pay a toll) it just remembers the last recorded speed.
i juist bought a $300 radar to prevent the tickets
i thought 1 ticke will run me about as much, so why not?
tacro - thanks for the info, i'll try the method
midi --- you have the M style wheel if you got the ///M logo on the bottom of the wheel... my 5-er is sports model, which means i got bigger wheels, lower suspension and ///M style wheel
