Car overheated toppled with on and off radiator and coolant problems...result: cracked cylinder head for a low funded college student.
My mechanic quoted a repair job price of $4500! He's a good guy, and comes highly recommended by family and friends, but I paid $5000 for my '97 528i 3 months ago, so $4500 is not making me smile.
I'm trying to make the repair job cheaper, so I called a few places, and the cheapest cylinder head I found was $1200 and $1000. My mechanic says because of all the components that have to be removed a lot of hours will go into the job, 14 hours to be exact, so you can imagine the bill!
Question: Anyone in the Bay Area know of any mechanics that won't charge as much or need as much time to do this job? Or does anyone know of a place to get cheaper, good quality cylinder heads?
I love this car and don't want to have to sell it, but that's how it's looking...
That seems kind of high.......I would think the average going price for a head gasket on your e39 would be about $1800 to $2500. I remember some past threads with estimates around $1800. for a head gasket replacement on the 2.8.
I would definitely shop around......but, make sure you go to certified BMW shops...does not necessarily have to be a BMW dealer.
