Cool high mileage '98 528i.. worth it?

hey everyone,
im new here, and dont really own a bmw [yet]..
but i've been looking around, and as a former student, [graduated today].. i'm runing somewhat low on 'disposable income'.

so, I found a 1998 528i in aspen silver. auto, heated seats, leather, 6cd changer, moon/sun roof, heated mirrors, fog lights, tinted windows, spoiler, and those 18", hollow looking spoke rims.
..
now, the catch is that it has about 228,000 km's on it.. but it's selling for $11,988 CAD.
.. good deal, or no?
i just dont want to buy the car, and have ll this stuff go wrong with it in the next few months. granted that it's been well maintained is the high mileage an issue?
and is it woth the cash output?

thanks to all that respond.

The transmission is an issue. Those trannys were made by GM, and they don't tend to last much beyond the mileage that the car is now.

If it was a manual, I'd say go for it, assuming it's been kept in good nick.

You would need to buy a car like that for about $8,000 The 6 cyl uses a different tranny than the 540 and can be problamatic. I have a beautiful 1999 540i with 93,000 miles on it for sale @ $13,500 The 6cyl goes for about $12,000 in my area under 100,000 miles in mint condtion. Hope this gives you a reference point.

Not unless you're inclined to pay for a new tranny. And at that point, might as well buy fastshivy's 540 given the cost.

I can confirm the tranny being an issue. I had to replace at around 95,000 miles. It is an auto. I have also replaced the cats, thermostat, water pump, A/C compressor, and both front wheel bearings. I think the bill for replacing all these parts has run me around $5,000 most of which was the tranny. I have so much in this car I am reluctant to get rid of it - oh yea, I love it thats why. lol....

Go for Fastshiveys car!

Ozark, long time no see!

I'm impressed you kept it under $5K for the tranny alone. Not to mention the cats, which are usually amazingly expensive. How'd you pull that off?

IIRC - The tranny was replaced for $3500 at the dealer. I think I got lucky on that. The service guy is a friend of mine and he said he cut me some slack. The rebuilt unit was around $2800 and the rest labor. I can't complain there too much.
The cats I bought were $312 from BMW 528i Catalytic Converters - Free Shipping - OEM Direct Fit. for the direct bolt on OEM replacement. It was the least expensive place I could find them. I took them up to Midas and they installed them for about $80.The dealer wanted $1800 to have them replaced.

Lets see the A/C compressor was $1200 and the thermostat deal I can't remember - it wasn't that bad. The front wheel bearings I bought from BavAuto for $150 each. Midas installed one a few weeks ago and I just got the other installed by an indy shop in the area I did not know about. Total labor for both bearings was about $300 between the indy shop and Midas. Heh - the dealer wanted $515 to do just ONE bearing including the part cost.

I haven't had any problems from the cats. I should have replaced the (lambda?) O2 sensors when I did that though.

I wasn't too impressed with the way Midas joined them to the exhaust. They didn't weld the joint but slipped the pipes together tightly and used some heavy duty u shaped clamps and torqued the bejesus out of them. They applied some hi temp sealant as well. They developed a tiny leak but resealed the joints for me when I took it back. No charge.

So overall I think the total is around $5000-$5500 give or take. I plan on keeping it forever so I keep telling myself. lol...

edit:
Fixed linky to catalytic converter site.

I just looked up the price for the cats on that site - they are now $394. Wow.

BTW - yea I have been away for a bit. Thanks for the welcome back! I am consumed with motorcycles so the bulk of my time is spent fiddling with those making them faster. lol...

I purchased my 99' 528iT wagon last January with 106K. on it for $9500.00. First thing I did is go through the fluids: diff., tranny, etc. Very nice ride!!! Don't regret it one bit.

Thumbs up

Sounds like a great deal. Good find and miles aren't too much either!

My 97 tranny is still going strong, at 145K miles. I just recently did a full fluid/filter change on it and the "clunk" i used to get going from D to P is gone. Still feels nice and solid. When I bought mine, it at 122K miles on it and needed only some minor things - trunk actuator, window regulator, a valve cover gasket, and a couple of brake pad wear sensors. Other than that, it was in great condition. The guy who owned it before me had just paid about $2300 in replacing the entire ABS system just 2 months before he sold it to me. I paid $8500 for it a little more than a year ago (then invested another 2K in upgraded 18" wheels and tires)
