This is my first post and its quite long so i'll say hi and crack on.

I own a 99 528i called betty who has developed an annoying problem.

Neither rear doors will open from the outsideThe central locking works and the actuators appear to work fine. I have stripped it down and oiled the locking mech but no joy. The cable from the ext handle to the locking mech seems to have lost tension but i cant get to the source i.e the ext handle as the back doors are 'double skinned' and it requires a bmw tool to remove the ext handle.

To make matters worse after several hours trying to fix the problem i ended up breaking the inside handle on one side and engaged the child lock on the other so i cant use either back door full stop.aaaahhhh!

Dont fancy bending over for the dealer so any help would be appreciated!!!

i would start with the inside handle that broke... follow the connection and the broken handle should lead you to a rod. Grip that rod with a pair of pliers or a vise grip and tug towards the fron of the car...( make sue it's in "unlock" position too)...

Once you have one door open, open the panels and study the linkage. you should be able to figure out whether it is the door handle, or the locking mechanism that went wrong.
