I haven't had the wiper assembly apart on the e34's but if they are similar to all others the spline the arm attaches to is stripped/or the pin in the linkage has disappeared. If you hear binding or crunching noises it's the latter
If the spindle is stripped you can A; replace the wiper transmission as a complete unit {The right way} or to get yourself out of a jam you can drill thru the wiper arm where it attaches to the spindle and try to put in a screw in there
also you can try removing the arm and using an epoxy .If the linkage has let go for that side you have to find the missing pivot join and put a small nut and bolt in there that won't bind during use.But as I said your local scrap yard or fleabay should have complete units reasonably cheap and would be a more reliable solution.Good luck!
