Help !! Transmission Fail safe

Hi everyone -

It's very cold here in Chicago and on my way home from the airport the Transmission Fail Safe came on in my 2003 E39. The car was perfect up until 5 miles away from home. It went into limp mode and I was able to get it pulled to the side of the highway. When I came to a stop i noticed some smoke and heard gears. I looked in my manual and followed directions and the car starts up just fine, but will not go into gear.

I had it towed and it's now sitting in my garage. What can be the problem?? Will disconnecting the battery reset it? It is because my car sat in -45 weather for 2 days and fluids froze up??

I am very upset and stressed out. I can't afford an expensive repair!!

Any advice would be really appreciated.

Thanks

Welcome to Bimmerwerkz.

Transmission fluid is extremley viscous, more so then oil, so I dont think the cold really had a factor in it. But, to find out for sure you need to have the OBD system scanned for trouble codes. Anytime the transmission goes into limp mode it will throw a DTC that will be stored in the computer. This code will help identify why the transmission went into limp mode, and help you to fix it.

Disconnecting the battery for one hour is a common way to reset the computer. This is worth a shot, but the issue may be mechanical in nature and not electrical based on what you stated.

Hi. I had the codes pulled and cleared. Seems to be shot. Car still won't go into gear.

What were the codes displayed?
