Help!! Tranny Problems on my 528i

Okay guys, so my brother decided to give his 528i to me. Its a '98, with 177,500 miles. The car drove great for about two months but now im having transmission troubles. The car goes into second gear but wont go any higher, its an automatic so i have to maually shift to 3rd and then put it back into drive once 3rd gear is established. It wont go into overdrive either, I was getting on the highway when this happened, and at around 55mph, the rpm was around 3500, way too high. What do you guys think it could be? Change the trans fluid? or the trans??!!

I don't wanna seem alarming, but a serious overhaul may be the only way to resolve that.

I have a very similar issue with my '95 540i it's like it gets stuck in gear but i know i have a bad wheel speed sensor and once i go from a to m and back it seems fine or sometimes it shifts fine in just A {adaptive??}I was leaning toward an abs sensor problem and maybe a tranny fluid and filter if that doesn't work,any thoughts?BTW at highway speed 60 to 90mph power is great maybe 1800-2200rpmswith my foot in it.

I would say it could be worth doing a fluid and filter change, although I would say a valve control body overhaul is more the likely canadidate, you will see this when you drop the trans pan and filter, its basically the box's brain....this will give you an insight:
