Folks; We are on our way home with our newly purchased '98 540i, on route home from the purchase site. We are currently in Richmond and en route home to Carroll County Maryland. The engine is stumbling badly. OBD codes included MAF Electronics, #7 cyl misfire and "various" misfires. I replaced the MAF in Richmond and the engine is still stumbling. I am only getting a single code now, #307 (cyl 7 misfire).
1) I cannot get my hands on a shop manual on the road (not from dealer or independent parts houses). I don't know which cylinder (near the FW I assume) is cyl 7. Possibilities? spark plug fouled from malfunctioning MAF? coil pack? Is there 1/cyl? or 1/every 2 cylinders? Suggestions?
2) I have a crank position sensor in hand, although I doubt this is the problem. Regardless; I would like to install it, but again don't know where it installs. Can anyone provide a description of how the CPS is installed?
Thanks for suggestions. We would like to get home tomorrow.

update: During the PPI last week, the BMW technician mentioned possible valve cover seepage. I'll try to pull the #7 plug and check for oil pooling in the well. Which of the 2 cyls in the back is #7? No manuals, as I mentioned.

Sounds like the MAF failed Fouling the plugs.... try changing the plugs and cleaning the MAF

Check the coil on the suspect cylinder - swap the coil on another cylinder and see if the problem migrates with the suspect coil from the suspect cylider. If it does it is the coil.

Yep...that did it. The problem followed the coil. Replaced and we were back on the road again. Thanks!
