New E34 Owner is an unknown quantity at this point
Hi There,

I have just brought a E34 520i, but have found a few problems that the Pre purchase inspector did not pick up.

1. The ABS light does not show up at all, I think it may have been disconneted? What things shoud I check or what could the problems be?

2. Trans light comes on after about 200km of driving. I stop turn the car off then wait for it to happen again after another 200km. what could it be & what could it cost me.

3. There is an oil leak from the front of the engine but not sure from where? Is this a common leak?

Thanks for any advice you can offer. I think I may be up for a lot of Money.

Other than that the cars a minter...but have to plan our overtaking moves before we leave home.

New e34

1. Abs lights come on when ignition is turned on, if not it can be bad light bulb, bad wire or worse; someone took it out so no one can notice the problem!!!!!
2.OIL LEAKS ARE NOT COMMON ON ANY GOOD CAR LET ALONE A BIMMER. front engine: will help alot if you tell us front buttom or front top? either way front button 1st check your drain plug I'll replace it (BMW plugs are hallow metals they break easy when over torqued. 2nd check the gasket of the oil pan make sure all screws are there and torqued as required (not over torqued either)
3. If oil leak on the top front you may want to check your valve cover gasket as you would for the oil pan (gaskets+screws) To do so you have to remove the larger black plastic cover with BMW logo (held down by 2 nuts)
4. Although I doubt transmission fluid problem because it is life time on BMWs; it does not hurt to check it through the filler plug on its side. you never know what the ex owner did. Other than that you may want to consider plugging it to a scanner at a local mechanic shop to give you the fault code. Then and only then you will know what is wrong with the transmission.
regards
billb
