525 is a very good car overall. If you are looking for performance, 525i is not what you want... look into 535i or 540i (they cost more).
They rarely break, and the suspension usually goes first.... plenty of people on these forums have 525s and other bimmers with well over 150 thousand miles and no problems.
I got a 90 525i as a starter car and so far so good.
I had a green 525i in my sig. Its a great car, lots of power, great steering. Everything in that car. It was my first car. I totaled it two weeks ago. I'm buying another, the accident I was in, I should have been killed, but i walked away with only a broken collar bone from the seat belt.
Great cars. I cant say anything bad about them.

A 535 is probably a better way to go.They do perform quite a bit better than the smaller engine, although the insurance may be a little more expensive.
