I unlock the car all the doors go to the back of the car grab the littlle button above the plate the door makes a noise like its trying to open but doesn't the only way it opens is with the release behind the the panel on the door
for E39 up to 6/1998, there is a TSB(Technical Service Bulletin) that mentions a faulty liftgate actuator causing the lock to be inoperative.
That would be a good place to start troubleshooting.
TIP: if in your search it does prove that the lock actuator is a fault, make sure you get a replacement that was manufactured after 11 May 1998. (Date wil be stamped on the actuator)
