swirl80 is an unknown quantity at this point
i have a 99 530d manual and everytime i push the clutch past the 'biting' point i get a slight grinding feeling....any ideas?

Yup. Same problem Da Red Dog has right now. Clutch release ('throwout') bearing failing. Expect to do a clutch replacement soon. ghead In the meantime, you can take it easy on the bearing if you can figure out how to shift without declutching, as I have.

You have a stuffed thrust bearing.Replace the clutch also when you do this job.
