Going crazy with 1st 1998 540I

I just bought this 1998 540I last month and its been nothing but problems since the second day! Bought the car from the second owner and he has done a ton of upgrades and really and really taken great care of the car. The second day we owned it the oil lines from filter blew holes in them, repaired them not to much of a problem, orderd new ones and installed. now every since the lines blew the check engine light has been comming on and off. been talking with vader and suggested new plugs, installed them on the 8th went to oregon and back that weekend and car was great. now yesterday light came on again and there were 9 codes 2-0300, 0133, 2-0305,0303, 0420n0430,0173, and the car is running bad when first started and cold. I am really starting to wonder If I haven bought a code waiting to happen. Havent been able to even smog the car yet. I really love the car but Im beginning to wonder If I got took for 6000.00 Any suggestions

In all fairness, you bought a used car. When I got my truck in Oct 2011, it had been sitting in someone's driveway since the plate expired in 2008. I had a few minor issues with it, but it was a 13 year old truck so i knew it wasnt going to be perfect.

I have issues with my E36 once in a while too. Im due to replace the rear subframe and trailing arm bushings this summer. Costly? Ya, but part of owning it.

Now, P0300-0305 are misfire codes. P0173-4 are lean codes. Here is an excellent thread I found concerning the same issue that your having. The OP describes getting the same codes you were and having the same issues.

Bingo!! I may have solved the misfire and lean codes P0171, P0174, P0300 - Bimmerfest - BMW Forums

Now, I dont know how common this is but hopefully this will help solve it.

Going crazy with my 540I, need help

Well today I took the car to get it smogged and It didnt pass. Failed! It failed the 15mph test, The HC ppm meas. 122 max is 49. And the NO ppm was 1315 and max is 409. Need any and all suggestions. Good news passed the 25mph with flying colors. Oh 1 thing I did do is unplug the maf and car is running great?

If you unplug your MAF and the car runs better then your MAF is bad.

Thankfully, I dont have emission testing where i live. If your NO levels were high check your O2 sensors. If their original its possible theyve worn out or the wiring is corroded and the car may be running rich.

Going crazy with my 540i

Yep good call vader! Checked all o2sensors and 3of the 4 were bad. Replaced all of them, running a bit better ty. And great news I thalllked to the previous owner and he is going to take care of the smog and what ever else it needs to pass. He really feels bad that everything srarted happening to the car, he is really a great guy and he really loved the car. Im going to post some pics of my rocket in next couple days. And will let you know how the smog went Thanks for the help
