BMWhatever is an unknown quantity at this point
The manual says that it should be ATF-type oil (BMW approved of course, what the hell that is) in the manual gearbox and hypoid (SAE 80 oe 90 or something I guess) type in the drive shaft. Now what is ATF-type oil? Is that something similar to the Dextron automatic transmission oil? What is approved by BMW?

E39 ATF is Dextron 1 and it is no longer available.

Dextron 1 is replaced by Dextron 2.

Completely compatable.

Lots of BMW using Redline ATF
and Redline MTL for hypoid gear grease.

Thanks, do you know what type it should be in the drive shaft (SAE type?).
