I have a 1999 BMW 540 I which has an automatic gearbox and 200 000 km. If the car is cold it is all good but after I drive for 15-20 min the gearbox starts giving me trouble. When I slow down or almost stop and the car shifts down from 2nd into 1st gear the back wheels are kinda blocking for a split of a second and it feels as if I had hit the brakes really hard and quickly released them after. Some times it dose it really hard, some times not so much and some times not at all. When I go to semi-manual tiptronic mode and I immobilize the car the gear box dose not shift down lower than 3rd gear and i have to shift down manually to 1st in order to accelerate from a complete stop. If there is anything I could do to avoid changing the gearbox please let me know. Thanks in advance and wish you all the best of luck.
Has the oil ever been changed in this gearbox? If not I'd start there. Find a reputable specialist gearbox service shop and have them do a complete fluid and filter change. Get them to run diagnostic on the system and see if there are any issues. Good luck and let us know how you go.
