I have a 1985 535i and when running (and for awhile after I shut if off) there is a strong gasoline smell - I have looked everywhere around the fuel lines and tank and see no leak. Any ideas? Seems to be coming from the engine compartment, and gets to be pretty bad inside the passenger compartment. Help!
Where is the expanison tank on your car, if against firewall, remove that tank and look for fuel line leaks below where the tank rested. This is a very common leak area on the E32 735 and 750 cars.

No I mean the coolant recovery bottle(where you fill the radiator) in BMW Speak this is called an expansion tank.
