Fuel leak

I have just replace the fuel pump on a 2001 530i. For a couple of days I could smell fuel but thought maybe I spilled some fuel. When I filled up for the first time after replacing the pump I had a bad fuel leak in a parking lot. It looked like it was coming from the top of the fuel tank on the drivers side. As I have used some gas the leak has stopped but can still smell fuel. I inspected the fuel lines that I could see under the back seat but all was dry. I removed both covers and noticed that the level was higher on the passenger side or the side with the fuel pump. Not sure if that is normal. Anyone have any ideas??
