Unhappy Fuel Check light & no acceleration

I have a 1990 525i the engine check light comes on with a severe lack of acceleration which is a total pain when trying to get away from traffic lights!
Would this be down to the Oxygen sensor? or pressure regulater, I am hoping its not the fuel pump as this will be about $300 which I cant afford!
Any help on this will be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

It can be down to many things, diagnostics would be a good idea or you will be paying out for things one by one, it could be fuel filter, o2, cam sensor, crank sensor and so on.

Unhappy hard to start & no acceleration

Thanks for that. I had a freind who goes to AAI college put it on the code reader for me, it came up with an O2 error but they are saying it is a fuel pump problem!
The problem has now settled down to being a pain in the arse to start from cold, does not want to move when finally starts up then on the road I put my foot down to accelerate at a decent rate, the engine check light comes on car splutters refuses to accelerate. So I take my foot off throttle engine check light goes off lightly put my foot down for light acceleration & no problem! Occasionaly after being sat at traffic lights same problem occurs.
I have had so many people telling me so many different things it could be I am now going round in circles with no idea where to start first!
Help please!!
