Smile Finished H&R Koni Install on my '99 540/6!

Well it took me 2 weeks over 3 weekends to do it, but I just completed installing H&R Sport springs and Konis at all 4 corners, plus replaced all front lower control arms and bushings and both upper control arms in the rears. Not fun and frought with frustration, but I am finally done and I am pleased. I dropped it off at the dealer tonight for an alignment tomorrow and then I'll be able to provide a full driving test report.

As for now, I think it rides smoothly enough, and it DEFINITELY looks menacingly lower. See "before" photo and some photos shot today (the one not dated "4-30-06" is the "before" pic). As soon as I have more time, I'll shrink these to the required size and post in my "vB Garage gallery".

This was about 45 days in planning, and about 15 days in execution. This is big for me, as some of you may remember my whining when I first bought my car about the difficult time I had changing valve cover gaskets....

Yes, it was a LOOONG time. I work long hours during the week, so I could only spend 2 to 3 hours on one or two nights during the week. One family event or another conspired to take away productive time on weekends too.

Also don't forget this wasn't just struts and springs, this included replacing both lower control arms in the front on both sides, plus tie rod ends, plus both upper control arms in the rear on both sides. If you've never pressed out the front ball joints on an E39, I don't want to hear it! :-)

Sure, if I was single, and/or hand even one other person helping me, I could have gotten it done a lot sooner. This project (and the research associated with it) consumed every free minute I had for 15 days. The sad reality is the small amount of free time I actually had. On the other hand, my wife has backed me on this and even made a few daytime parts pickups for me, so it could have been a lot worse...

Thanks man! We've been married for over 12 years, and I'd be lying if I said I 'never' doubted over that span of time, but I must say it's extremely rare. We are usually quite happy together! Being a former divorcee, I'm totally aware of how blessed I am to have such a great wife and family now.

looks sweet dude... has a nice, agressive stance now, without being too crazy..

I hear ya on the time factor bud.. I have been married 12 yrs as well (13 in November) and have 4 kids ages 8 and below...

When I replaced the head gasket on my prelude, it took me about 3 days, a job that should have only taken about 5-6 hrs.

So, needless to say, I cherish the time I do get to work on my cars..

Speaking of wives, my wife was VERY oposing the idea of me getting the 540... she wanted a 11 second Supra a friend of mine was selling lol

That Supra was great, but it would set us back at least 25k and it just didnt feel as good to drive as my 540... Plus I got the 540 for 12k

*i know you guys all hate me at this point*

But I have a REALLY bad driving record (I got 15 points in one pull-over plus my prev history... and I am only 23!) so maybe thats another reason I held back from getting the Supra...

Anyways, when the dust settled, I had a 540 and guess what... now my wife cant get enough of driving MY 540

I guess I won at the end (the car and my wife)

My 2 cents,

Eric,
You have done a good job and spent lots of time on this car. This car will last you a long time. I still love this body style (E39).

The drop looks good. You say the ride is "smooth." Can you expand on the ride quality? Is it firm in the corners? Is it bouncy at all? Thanks!

Good Questions. I am still evaluating, as this is only the second day i've driven the car to work. Will publish my impressions in the next day or so, once I've sorted through my findings and tried a few different "settings" on the adjustable front struts.

At this point I will say that I've experienced all of the above, so what I want to do is better quantify degree of each and under what conditions. So far, I likeeee....

Done! See my write-up in a separate thread. Itís long-winded, but it takes a lot of words to try to make an objective write-up out of something so subjective as ride and handling.
