filter???

Hello,
I have a question on a '95 840ci... I know this is the wrong forum but I also know that some of you may have had one in the past or know something on this model
My question is, under the hood there are two boxes, one on each corner of the engine compartment (similar to the E39, cabin air filter). The one on the driver's side is the fuse box, the other, on the passanger's side, is some type of air filter??? Can someone tell me what this filter is for? I can't find any info on it. The other choice is to call the dealer.
I've attached a pic for clarity. By the way, the filter for the cabin in located between these two boxes (middle of engine compartment) on this model.

No no no... I know where the air filter is.... come on!!!
This box is in the upper left corner on that pic, Do you see it? It's next the hood support/gas spring.

Anyway, thank you for your comment but that's not it. I'm sorry I wasn't clear enough.

On an 850, the black box on the passenger side of the engine compartment right beside the hood hinge houses the DME (Digital Motor Electronics) and the EML (Electronic Engine Performance Control). Underneath the cover on the black box (4 screws) you will find three silver cannisters with large wiring harnesses coming from them. Front two are DME's rear one is the EML. I can only guess that it is the same on an 840.
