Engine Noise E39

A few days ago when I started my 1998 528i in the morning, I heard a loud knocking or Rattling sound coming from the engine. And when I turned my steering wheel to the right or left, it sounded like metal grinding to metal. But after 5 minutes or so, when the car seemed like it was warmed up, the noises were gone. This is the 3rd time it has happen, and seems to only happen in the morning.

I checked my engine oil level, and it's fine. I haven't had the chance to check my power steering fluid. Could it be my power steering? I did notice a leak coming from the power steering resorvior. Any advice before taking it in to a mechanic would be greatly appreciated.

I dunno. My sisters 525 had a similar problem but it did the grinding noise all the time and go louder with speed it seemed. I checked the fluid which was a 15 second job and she was out. I toped it off now it is great just gotta keep an eye on it. So I suggest u check it asap if not you could destroy your rack. I dunno how dard it is to check a '98's power steering fluid but u should make time cause what time it takes to check and the money it costs to replace it is a big amount compared to preventative maintenance.

One possible culprit could be your fan clutch.

When the car is cold:

-Remove fan & fan clutch
-Drive around for just a few seconds or so and try to repeat the symptoms
-If no grinding / clunking noise, your fan clutch is shot
