have a 2001 525i
driving couple weeks ago, noticed battery light on...car died a couple minutes later. There was a clicking sound if I pressed on gas while it was dying, noticed some smoke come out exhaust when looked in rearview.

mechanic said water pump broke (which is obviously true by looking it...loose) dumped all antifreeze out of car. Broke a belt and fried my engine. Said smoke was all in my exhaust system. Said the engine is cracked but I know they have aluminum blocks. Trying to figure out if engine is really fried or mechanic lying to me..HELP!
Car turns over but will not start. Appears from one person looking head gasket is not blown, coolant is not in my oil system but person said "hard to tell what's really wrong unless replace water pump and go from there" do not want to keep spending money if engine is done.
What color smoke? Did it come out white and smell like antifreeze? Did it come out black and smell like oil? I don't think the smoke was just hiding in your exhaust system waiting for a chance to escape. You could have a cracked head. Do a compression check and log the results, just so you know what's happening there. You didn't notice any check engine lights, any high water temperature or low oil pressure gauge readings, anything else before it died?
