I've done the Hella Celis rear tails on my '99 540, which will be the same deal as on your '97. There is a Celis "Kit" made by Hella specifically to retrofit onto E39's up to MY2000. This kit is not cheap, but includes the all-important ballasts to power the L.E.D. stype of rear running lights and avoid dash display warnings. Plug-n-play cable adapters are also included and are necessary, as are the included bushings/spacers and washers. Using the kit I found the job to be low-to-medium diffculty, requiring about 3 hours (I work slowly). I would not recommend trying to retrofit 2001-later tails to your car unless it is via this Hella kit!!
Yes, some additional holes need to be drilled and some existing holes enlarged, but with a dremel I found it to be do-able. Hella's instructions are available on-line (try bmwtips.com), so preview them if you have any concerns. After my hole-drilling, I was VERy careful to re-paint the cut metal areas to prevent corrosion.
All in all, I am TOTALLY pleased with how they look!!

See my profile photo to judge for yourself. Also do a search for a recent post here where I shared before-and-after photos of not Celis tails on my car, as well as the M5 front grills.
