98 528i with 183k miles. While driving at around town speeds (in Drive) it will suddenly act like it's been moved into neutral. If I take it down to 3rd and then back into Drive - it moves back into gear hard. Does the same thing when I drove it in 3rd gear - goes for a ways (1/2 mile) then freewheels like it's in neutral until I shift it into another gear then back into drive. Could this be a vacuum issue?
Thanks,
Bob
If this gearbox hasn't had the oil changed in it, which is it has been serviced as per BMW's instructions, it hasn't, then I'd start with a auto transmission specialist shop that can get the majority of the oil out of the gear box and torque converter. It shouldn't cost the earth and they whould be able to run some diagnostics on the gearbox to see what the problem is. Make sure they change the filter at the same time.
