Angry E39 Tourer - front suspension

Late yesterday I ran the car up onto the ramps to locate the temperature sensor. The ramps are normal height and have been used many times before.
As the car reached the stops there was a load bang. When I drove the car off the ramps there was some light rubbing and then I realised the front suspension had collapsed on both sides. It is down evenly and is just driveable. Has anyone experienced this before. As it was raining hard today I have not had a chance to examine the struts and springs. Judging from the noise I would even suspect the sub-frame has cracked.
Any thoughts or experiences ?????
