Ok now what is the boot is it inside the trunk or behind the rear wheel? Thanks for the rest I can do this.

Disconnect the cable pin. You might have to pull a bit hard to take it off as it has been there for a while. Thanks a lot. I am new to the site.
I have just purchased a 1998 540i with 77000 miles and it came with no books so I don't have a clue as to how the car operates. It is extremely difficult to find an owners maanual.If I find one I will post.
