I've just bought a 2001 E530i, and don't understand what's happening on acceleration. From a standstill, if I hold the accelerator at a given point, it accelerates with the tach up to, say, 3000... when if shifts, the revs don't fall back down and work their way back up to 3000, it just stays really close to 3000. Maybe nods down to 2800, then back to 3000.

Is there any sort of variable ratio shifting going on here? If I switch to Steptronic, and shift myself, then the revs pop up to 3000, then fall back to 1500 or something, and that repeats, as with other auto-trans cars. I can see there's an advantage to what's happening with mine in the auto-shift mode, but would like to know what it's about!
