e39 Navigation System

I am buying a 2000 528i with the Nav system installed, however the Nav unit in the trunk was stolen and the display does not come on inside the car. If I purchase a new Nav unit for the trunk will the display start working again?

probably.

Or you can do what I did and upgrade the whole thing to a MKIV and a Widescreen display from bimmernav. The cabling in the 2000 E39 is all set so it's basically plug and play.

The Navi module supplies the screen with the video (RGB) signals. Installing the nav should bring the screen back up provided nothing else is missing or damaged.

Nav System

I just purchased a 99 540i, it doesn't have a nav system in it...is it possible to install a factory one from a 2000 or later, or would I be better off going with an aftermarket GPS...Thanks

it is possible to install factory gps, i believe they are the same from 97-03 except for the ratio (4:3 or 16:9)
it might be cheaper to install aftermarket, but i dont know how many of them will keep the buttons on the steering wheel operational
