E39 Light Question

Hey I was wondering do the side marker lights turn on when the parking lights are on? Or do they only come on when signaling? I can't seem to remember if they're normally on when the parking/headlights are on. Thanks!

And just for a strange piece of trivia, the Acura TL's side marker lights come on with the parking lights, but do NOT blink with the turn signal.

Another interisting point, the Honda Civic with the mexican conversion has side markers that are blue with the parking lights on and flash 8 different colors when turning.
